I first met Luc and Jodie Morlet about a decade ago at a mutual friend’s birthday dinner in Napa, though my admiration for their wines began long before that evening. I had already been collecting Morlet Family Vineyards in my personal cellar for years, while also featuring their newest releases on beverage programs I oversaw during my career as a sommelier and beverage director for some of America’s finest restaurants. When I finally sat down with Luc for a professional tasting, the goal was to delve into the heart of what Morlet Family Vineyards stands for: their mission, philosophy, and vision as a brand. What followed was the longest and one of the most rewarding encounters I’ve had in my career. A scheduled 2.5-hour appointment expanded into nearly 7 hours, from morning until dinner, as our conversation wandered through every corner of wine philosophy: viticulture, viniculture, winemaking intention, trade politics, family legacy, and the evolving demographics of wine drinkers.
That marathon tasting alone could inspire a dozen articles. Personally, I deeply admire the Morlet family’s philosophies on grape growing, winemaking, and élevage, and I find them endlessly fascinating. Their commitment to excellence radiates from every bottle, which is why I can say, without hesitation, that I love these wines. And I am far from alone. Morlet Family Vineyards has earned critical acclaim from Robert Parker, Jeb Dunnuck, Antonio Galloni, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, and many others, affirming the uncompromising quality of their work. Since 2008, their wines have been poured at the White House more than a dozen times. They are consistently delicious, world-class expressions that deliver immense satisfaction and pleasure.
When you sit down with Luc Morlet of Morlet Family Vineyards, the conversation immediately stretches beyond technical winemaking. You get philosophy, history, and storytelling all in one glass. Luc’s roots trace back to Champagne, where his family worked the vineyards for generations, but his vision has always been bigger than producing sparkling wine. When he arrived in California, he brought with him not only technique but also a philosophy: wines should be authentic, unmanipulated, and reflective of both their place and their time.
“We have to be ourselves. Yet, I keep the French principles of great wine: a gentle hand, work with nature, let terroir and vintage express themselves.”
This ethos defines Morlet’s wines today. They are powerful without being overwhelming, elegant without being fragile. He calls them “gourmet and gourmand” rich and generous, but also refined and fresh. For Luc, wine should never be about fashion or manipulation. It should be about honesty, harmony, and connection.
The Philosophy of Force and Finesse
When Luc talks about winemaking, he returns again and again to the idea of balance force and finesse, strength and elegance. The “force” is the concentration, the richness, the sheer power that comes from low-yielding vines and perfectly ripened fruit. The “finesse” is the freshness, the seamless texture, the quiet persistence that makes a wine age gracefully and invite you back for another sip.
“I call our wines gourmet and gourmand almost hedonistic, yet fresh and compact at the same time.”
This duality isn’t something that happens by accident. It starts in the vineyard, where Luc insists on per-acre contracts rather than per-ton agreements. That way, he controls the yields and can make decisions for quality rather than volume. He works with growers who share his philosophy, many of whom farm organically, and has three estate vineyards located in St. Helena, Oakville, and Knights Valley.
In the cellar, he resists shortcuts. No spinning cones, no reverse osmosis, no enzymes to push extraction. His wines are fermented with native yeast and aged in French oak barrels, often for extended periods. They are unfined and unfiltered, showing a natural haze in the glass that he considers a badge of authenticity.
“Our wines are unfined, unfiltered. The proof they are not manipulated is the haziness you sometimes see.”
Chardonnay: Harmony in the Glass
Chardonnay has long been a cornerstone of Morlet Family Vineyards, and Luc approaches it with the same sense of balance that defines his overall philosophy. His fruit comes from some of California’s most respected sites, including the Ritchie Vineyard and Nobles Ranch.
“When I work on Chardonnay, I want richness and freshness at the same time. It should be creamy but not heavy, mineral but not austere.”
Fermentation occurs entirely in French oak barrels, with bâtonnage adding texture and protecting the wine from oxidation. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur naturally, often partially, which gives the wines stability while retaining vibrancy. The result is Chardonnays that are at once hedonistic and mineral-driven, capable of aging gracefully for decades.
Named in honor of his daughter, Claire, Ma Princesse, this Chardonnay comes from Ritchie Vineyard. The wine offers layers of Meyer lemon, orchard fruits, hazelnut, and brioche, lifted by an energetic mineral backbone. Or Ma Douce, from Nobles Ranch, which shows more exotic fruits and floral notes, yet still finishes with striking freshness.
“Just as our logo symbolizes harmony, when I work on a wine, I am searching for great wine, and it must be seamless, complex, and capable of aging with grace.”
These Chardonnays prove that California can rival the best of Burgundy, not by copying it, but by respecting its own terroir and climate.
Pinot Noir: Staying True to Its Nature
Pinot Noir, for Luc, must remain true to itself. He’s adamant that it should never be vinified like Cabernet, never over-extracted or over-oaked.
“Pinot Noir needs to remain sincere. It should never be a ‘baby Cab.’”
From Nobles Ranch in the Sonoma Coast, Luc produces three distinct Pinot Noirs: Joli Cœur, En Famille, and Coteaux Nobles. Each comes from different vineyard exposures and soils, yet all share a purity of fruit and aromatic complexity.
Luc treats Pinot with the same gentle hand he applies to Chardonnay. Whole-berry fermentations preserve brightness, and larger oak vessels, known as puncheons, are used for certain cuvées to highlight aromatics. The wines show wild cherry, raspberry, and potpourri notes, accented by sandalwood and forest floor.
“Pinot is about perfume and nuance. If you push it too far, you lose the soul of the grape.”
The result is Pinot Noir that is delicate yet persistent, layered yet sincere wines that speak softly but leave a lasting impression.
Syrah: Crafted Like Pinot Noir
Luc’s Syrah program may be small, but it reflects his unique approach. He sources fruit from Bennett Valley, where rocky soils and cooler conditions produce Syrah with savory depth. He co-ferments multiple clones and treats the wine almost like Pinot Noir, with gentle punchdowns and long barrel aging.
The result is Bouquet Garni, a Syrah that lives up to its name with aromas of lavender, thyme, black olive, and smoked meat. On the palate, it offers concentration without heaviness, finishing with freshness and spice.
“I craft the Syrah like I craft Pinot Noir. That’s why if you find some resemblance between the two, it’s logical.”
Bouquet Garni shows that Syrah, in the right hands, can achieve both force and finesse, combining muscle with aromatic lift.
Cabernet Franc: Two Faces of Nobility
If there is one grape that Luc champions above all others in Napa, it might be Cabernet Franc. Too often relegated to blending, Cab Franc takes center stage at Morlet Family Vineyards in two distinct cuvées: Force de la Nature and Force Tranquille.
“We planted Cabernet Franc because I believe it deserves to stand on its own, not just as a blender.”
Force de la Nature is bold and powerful, with ripe blackcurrant, graphite, and savory herbs. Force Tranquille, on the other hand, is more ethereal, with notes of violets, red currant, and a silky texture. Together, they prove the grape’s versatility and nobility.
“Force de la Nature and Force Tranquille are two very different expressions of Cabernet Franc, but both show its nobility.”
These wines are proof of Morlet’s philosophy: the same grape, the same terroir, yet two expressions of force and finesse.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux Blends: Passion and Precision
Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of Napa Valley, and Morlet handles it with the same care he applies to every varietal. His estate vineyard in St. Helena, combined with fruit from his estate vineyards in Oakville and Knights Valley, provides the foundation for wines like Mon Chevalier, Passionnément, and Les Petits Morlet.
Named in honor of his wife, Jodie, Passionnément, the Morlet flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, lives up to its name with passion and precision. It is powerful yet polished, rich in cassis and black cherry, with layers of tobacco, cedar, and spice. While the Mon Chevalier was named in honor of his son, Paul, it leans more towards savory notes, with hints of garrigue and graphite. Finally, the Les Petits Morlet offers an approachable yet still complex entry point.
Even in challenging vintages like 2022, Morlet’s wines shine. His use of shade cloth, canopy management, and careful irrigation helps maintain balance in extreme conditions. Block-by-block fermentations give him the flexibility to create blends that remain harmonious no matter the vintage.
These Cabernets and blends are designed to age, but they also deliver immense pleasure, the hallmark of force and finesse.
Beyond the Glass: Wine as Connection
For Luc, wine is more than fermentation and farming; it’s a way of connecting with others. He sees every bottle as a bridge, something to be opened and shared around the table, sparking conversation, laughter, and memory.
“Bridges connect people, just like wine should.”
That belief carries into his own family. Many of the wines were named in honor of family members, reminders that their work is rooted not just in terroir but in love and legacy. To pour one of these bottles is to share a story, a name, and a piece of the Morlet family’s identity. Sharing a Morlet wine is about what happens around it, the conversations with friends, the meals with family, the connections forged across cultures and generations.
Luc and his wife Jodie have built the brand as proud parents, and today there’s a new chapter in that story: their daughter Claire has joined the family business. For any family in the wine industry, passing on the torch to the next generation is both a source of pride and a promise for the future.
Force and Finesse in Every Glass
Luc Morlet’s wines are not about mimicry. They are not about fashion or manipulation. They are about authenticity, terroir, and the balance of force and finesse.
Whether it’s the mineral energy of Ma Princesse Chardonnay, the sincerity of Joli Cœur Pinot Noir, the savory depth of Bouquet Garni Syrah, the dual expressions of Force de la Nature and Force Tranquille Cabernet Franc, or the seamless power of Passionnément and Mon Chevalier, each wine tells a story of precision and passion.
“At the end of the day, wine is about bringing people together.”
In a world where marketing often overshadows meaning, Morlet’s wines remind us of what truly matters: honesty, harmony, and the joy of sharing something beautiful. With every glass, you taste not only the vineyard but also the philosophy of a winemaker who has dedicated their life to uniting force with finesse.
